Part 25

Nani walked to the breakfast table with a bright smile on her face. All the family members were surprised to see her so cheerful after what had happened last night but didn’t voice their thoughts as they didn’t want her to be unhappy again.

Nani greeted every one and even greeted her older grandson who seemed to be in one of his black moods this morning. He had just nodded at her greeting and said a brisk good morning to her and had gone back to his grumpy mood. But nothing could spoil Nani’s mood today.

She waited for HP and his help to finish serving and when the help had retired to the kitchen and her family had started eating. She took a deep breath and prayed to Devi Maiyya for blessings and said “I have something to say to all of you. Last night after the discussion with Chotey I have thought it through and decided that just because Chotey is not interested in marriage it doesn’t mean we have to ignore Aakash.”

All her family looked at her except her older grandson who behaved like nothing was new and had continued eating his breakfast. She noticed her son Manohar nod after giving it some thought. She saw that Manorama was weeping tears of joy and was hugging Aakash who was seated beside her. She saw Aakash who was trying to move away from his mother’s clutches. She saw Anjali looking so happy and grinning like a kid with a big candy in her hand. She saw the Sharma’s watching the Raizada’s with a smile on their lips.

She continued “I think I have a good girl in mind for him..” this got everybody’s attention back on her again except of course her Chotey’s who was behaving as if this was all old news to him and kept eating his breakfast. She ignored him and said to the rest of her family

“Her personality and Aakash’s personality will be a wonderful match,” she paused looked at the eager faces of her family and proudly declared her choice for Aakash

“I am talking about Khushi bitiya..”

“WHAT!!” came three horrified voices at once which almost gave her a heart attack and almost sent her packing out of this world.

Devyani had expected one voice but… three voices… she had not even dreamed about this. She saw Manorama standing and looking for a way to voice her thought to her mother-in-law, this she expected, she knew Manorama wanted a rich daughter-in-law, she also knew how to handle this issue.

Then she looked at Aakash who was also standing, she frowned what was with Aakash he didn’t like Khushi? Or maybe it was just the suddenness of her announcement but she knew whatever it was she would be able to convince Aakash quite easily.

Then she looked at her Chotey, who stood there fuming at her, “What had she done, now?” She had not said anything related to him at all. She saw him open his mouth and try to say something to her but he stopped midway and had stormed out of the dining area toppling his chair on his way out towards the stairs to his room. They also heard him bang his room door shut and also heard something crash in his room.

She looked around the table to see Aakash and Manorama leaving as well, she also noticed Anjali following Aakash to his room and she frowned she never seemed to do anything right now-a-days.

She had seen Payal and Khushi again last night and had imagined her house if the two sisters were her to stay for good in her house. She didn’t wish for much she just wanted her grandsons to settle down with their life partners. She had a secret desire to hold her great-grand-child in her arms before she bids good bye to this world.

She adored the two girls. She saw how Payal was strong and mature, she also saw how innocent and lovable Khushi was. She wanted both. She had decided that they would be perfect matches for her grandson’s. Payal would be able to handle Arnav and his infamous temper with her maturity and patience. It could not be Khushi for Arnav, like she had wished when she had first met Khushi, he would destroy her beautiful world with his cynicism.

But she was not ready to let Khushi go, Khushi’s smiles always brightened her day. Her Aakash would be the gentle lover that Khushi deserved. Khushi would be so good for Aakash’s introvert nature. Khushi’s open loving nature and Aakash’s affectionate nature would blend so well. Both couples would be perfect for each other she had thought and expressed her desire to her older grandson.

But her older grandson had chucked her plans in the trash bin after irrecoverably damaging them. She had felt defeated but thinking about it again, she had realized she still had Aakash to take care of. Just because Arnav did not want to get married doesn’t mean that Aakash has to stay away from marriage. Yes, she had decided what her course of action would be and had gone to bed much more at peace with the world.

So she had come to the breakfast table to express her thoughts and this was the result. She definitely understood Manorama’s reaction, she could also guess Aakash’s reluctance but what left her clueless was her Chotey’s reaction.

He is so complex, she just decided to ignore his reaction and headed towards Aakash’s room to see what was bothering her not-so-crazy grandson.

Part 24

GUPTA HOUSEHOLD:

THE GIRLS BEDROOM:

Khushi was sitting on the bed in her night wear ready for bed and just staring into space. Payal entered the room with a glass of water and looked at Khushi. Payal frowned Khushi thinking about something, which was a rare sight. Payal placed the glass on the bedside table and went and sat on her side of the bed and still there was no reaction from Khushi. Now Payal was worried had something happened that was troubling Khushi. She couldn’t stand the thought so she shook Khushi gently by her shoulder and said

“What is it Khushi?”

Khushi turned and looked at Payal and gave a small uncertain smile and immediately lay down on the bed pulled her pillow put it in her Jiji’s lap and settled down with her head on the pillow.

Payal was used to this, whenever they shared important stuff, happy or sad, this was how Khushi would open up to her and let Payal into her thoughts. Khushi would lie down with her head in her lap and talk out all her feelings looking at the stars that they had hung above their bed. So Payal smiled and as she moved Khushi’s hair out of her way so that she could lie down more comfortably and asked her

“Is something bothering you Khushi?”

“mmm Jiji, I wanted to tell you about this for the past few weeks but I never knew how to explain it… mm actually even now I don’t know how to explain it…I think there is something wrong with me.” She finished in a hurried jumbled classic Khushi way.

“Khushi are you not feeling well? What do you mean by something is wrong with you?” Payal asked her tone calm but her emotions still seeping into her dialogue.

“No Jiji I think I am ok.. but it’s just these feelings, I can’t think straight, I forget what I want to say, I feel like… I feel like …mmm forget it Jiji” Khushi was squirming in bed trying to put into words all she feels and trying to describe all the emotions.

Khushi stopped took a deep breath and asked “Jiji What is the difference between love and infatuation?”

Payal smiled and thought “Finally…God…Thank you…. Finally it’s happening!!”. She had waited for her sister to have these feelings for a long time, but Khushi never seemed to have them, she was always the little girl with no idea of the power of hormones or emotions for the opposite gender, she completely skipped that stage.

When Khushi was 16, there were boys who lived in their neighborhood and in her class who used to be interested in her and Khushi used to be so oblivious to their intentions. Not that she wanted Khushi to fall in love at that age but it’s normal for all girls to have a crush and to try hard to be in the good books of their crush. Payal believed its part of development and every person needed to go through it to prepare for life but she had never witnessed Khushi have a crush.

In the beginning Payal used to think that Khushi was just hiding her feelings well. But as the years passed Khushi stayed the same and Payal had realized, Khushi truly hadn’t grown up yet. Khushi had never had a crush Ofcourse, Salman Khanji was the only exception.

When that realization happened she became more protective of Khushi, Payal knew having such tender feelings get crushed is a sad-hard thing to go through and with Khushi’s innocence added in she knew Khushi would break and break really hard.

She had cautioned Khushi time and again about the boys who might be interested in her in her college but Khushi had blown her off saying, “aaawww… Jiji you always get the wrong idea, he was just being nice that’s all.”

And when the boy did end up proposing to Khushi, she used to be so shocked that she would make and eat a mountain of Jelabi’s and say, “Jiji I don’t think I love him, I don’t feel any different about him than I feel about any other boy I know. It should be different right Jiji, I will feel the difference when I am in love right Jiji.”

Then she would feel sorry for the boy and get worried about his feelings and say “Jiji if he is really in love with me and I say no I will really hurt him Jiji. Maybe I should just say yes….” And that is when Payal would step in and say “Khushi you will hurt him more if you say yes now without truly loving him. It won’t last Khushi.”

Payal knew Khushi believed in love but she also knew Khushi believed in the institution of marriage more. Khushi had said that her Devi maiyya would send her a husband she would fall in love with or her Devi maiyya would make sure she falls in love with a person who would end up as her husband.

And now finally it was happening Khushi was asking her about infatuation and love, finally her sister was stepping into the world of new feelings and emotions. She came out of her thoughts when Khushi slightly shook her and said “Jiji??”

“Love and infatuation… hmm…you can never say Khushi it’s different for each person. But if you ask me I would say, love is far deeper than an infatuation in terms of trust and selflessness. If you are in love and he asks you to do something you will trust him completely and won’t think twice about doing what he asked. In love you will always put his happiness before yours. If you are truly in love and you realize his happiness is elsewhere you will set him free. These things won’t even arise in an infatuation. Infatuation is more about being attracted to how they look and how they behave and other superficial things. But I wouldn’t say infatuation is useless, in many cases it is the first step towards true love.”

Payal saw Khushi listen to her with utmost concentration and then she asked Khushi gently “Why are you asking me all this Khushi?”

“mmm… nothing Jiji, Lavanya said she might be falling in love with Nanheji.. so it got me thinking.. that’s all… ok goodnight Jiji.” Khushi said and got up and settled on her side of the bed and turned away from Payal and closed her eyes.

Payal knew that was not all that was on Khushi’s mind and decided that Khushi would tell her in her own time and said goodnight and settled down.

***********************

Khushi tried and tried but her thoughts were going back to the same person again and again. She had never before in her life spent so much time thinking. She didn’t know why in just a few encounters he had become such a major part in her life.

Since the day she looked into his eyes, nothing looked the same to her. She was scared of the funny feelings he generated in her and she wanted to be away from him. She remembered how she had run away from him like a fool the first time they met just terrified of dealing with her own feelings. When she had calmed down that night, she had scolded herself for behaving like an idiot in front of him.

She remembered the time when she had seen him enter the restaurant with a beautiful lady on his arm and she had felt another new feeling, a feeling that was a mixture of hurt, loss and hopelessness had stung her heart and she couldn’t figure out why. She had immediately picked up her book and tried hard to ignore his presence in the room.

Eventually, she had got engrossed in the story till the little boy had come up to her to ask her if he could eat with her as his parents were talking only big people stuff and he felt bored with them. After the little boy was at her table she had almost forgot his presence in the room excluding an uneasy feeling at the pit of her stomach, until he stood up to leave and she had stared at his back till she could no longer see him.

She had come home that night and thought about it real hard. She was not supposed to feel like this about someone she didn’t know. So she had vowed to never let him affect her like this anymore. He had his life with the girl he was with and she would build her own without him in it.

But then again this morning when she realized that the engagement was at his home, the feelings returned with a vengeance. Even the thought that he would be there put her in such a nervous state that she had earned herself double the amount of “Sanka Devi’s” from buaji. She had finally given up running away from her feelings and had walked up to her Devi Maiyya and begged her to not let him be at home.

Devi Maiyya who usually ignores most of her wishes had chosen to grant her this wish and he was not at home and didn’t return till just before she left. She remembered how after the engagement Naniji had asked Aakashji to show them around the house and all of the younsters were shown around the beautiful house. But what made her love the house was the pool in the middle of the house and the beautiful garden that surrounded it. It looked like a beautiful oasis in a harsh desert. She had felt at peace, happy and content standing there in the middle of the garden. She felt at home surrounded by a strange harmony.

When she had gone to touch one of the plants Aakashji had told her to be careful and not pluck anything because every plant in that garden was planted and taken care by his brother and he would know even if one leaf was removed from them. He went on to tell her that his brother spent his free time tending to them and taking care of them. He had said that this was where his brother relaxed away from his hectic schedule.

Khushi had realized that his heart lay there in this garden amidst his plants, the source of his happiness was here and she liked to be there. When the rest of the party had moved on to see the rest of the house, she asked them to go ahead as she wanted to spend some more time there.

She sat there thinking about him. How gentle his heart would be if he could tend to these plants with such care. She had also seen how much his family revered him, he must be their strength how strong his heart would be to be the support system for so many people. Thanks to Lavanya, she already knew how much he had achieved in life, she realized he had the heart of a lion to face the world at such a tender age and to win it on his terms. She admired the many facets in him.

Today at the engagement party Khushi realized that he would be a semi constant figure in her life as Nanheji and Lavanya were settling down in India and also she had overheard her mom promising Naniji to visit her as frequently as possible. So there was no way to run away from him or avoid him.

Then she decided that she would rather bury her feelings and make him an acquaintance rather than let her feelings come in the way and destroy any decent thing they might ever share. Sitting there on the swing she had decided that the next time she meets him she would be cordial to him and not act crazy. So she took a deep breath and let go of whatever feelings she had for him and resolved that she would be just herself if she were to meet him again.

After gathering her thoughts she looked up to her parents in the sky for approval and smiled when they twinkled at her. She realized that she could see the moon and the stars in the pool too. So she had got up and walked over to the pool and sat down at its edge to see her parent’s reflection in it.

That’s when she heard him enter, she somehow knew it was him even before she looked up to meet his eyes. An involuntary shiver had gone down her spine at the look in his eyes but when he had walked over to the swing and untangled her dupatta she had taken a deep breath to steady herself and reminded herself about throwing away her feelings and behaving normally. So she had gathered her strength and taken the first step forward to start a normal conversation.

And now after talking to her jiji about infatuation and love. She asked herself do you trust him so much you would you do anything he asked and her immediate reply was an uncertain NO. Khushi sighed a relieved sigh happy that it was not love that she felt for him so it didn’t bother her anymore that she decided to chuck away her feelings. She turned towards her jiji cuddled up to her and fell into a deep slumber.

She ignored the uncertainty in her own answer. She had also conveniently forgotten the part that her Jiji said about infatuation being the first step to true love.

Part 23

As soon as he entered he found his Di sitting on the edge of his bed and waiting for him, she was on the phone and as soon as he entered he heard her say

“Ji, he is here I will call you later.” And then disengaged the call and looked at Arnav as he settled himself beside her.

“Chotey, you were very wrong in talking to Nani like that.”

“Di please, I had to make her understand that what she is waiting for me to do is just not going to happen. She had to understand… Di.. she had to move on..”

“But Chotey, marriage is an important part of life…”

“It’s not necessary part of life it’s just a social norm, Di”

“Chotey, what about Sanaaji, she must be expecting you to take the next step in your relationship.”

“Both Sanaa and I know very well that there is no next step in our relationship Di, if there is any step, it will just be moving on with our lives without each other” his temper was raising now

“What do you mean Chotey? Are you guys breaking up?” Gosh his Di always took the wrong meaning of his words.

“NO Di, but I just meant that other than that our relationship has nowhere to go.”

“You just talk about breaking up with her without any care, without any emotion without even a small frown… she means nothing to you, Chotey” His blood was starting to boil now

“Di, I am not ditching an innocent girl, Sanaa knew what she was getting into and she also understands the dynamics of the relationship. I made it very clear to her right at the beginning that I will not ever offer her something more in this relationship and she agreed.”

“No Chotey, that’s not what I meant ….” He looked at her questioningly and she continued

“I was just observing that the thought of leaving Sanaaji doesn’t affect you at all.” He frowned what was his Di trying to say.

“You don’t love her.” She completed

“DI, how many times do I have to tell you that there is no such thing as LOVE… “

“No Chotey, there is love and I pray to Devi Maiyya every day to send the girl who will make you fall in love into your life soon.”

ASR just laughed sarcastically at his Di but his subconscious flashed a picture of “HER” and his laugh stopped midway and a frown made its way on to his brow “No it can’t be…”

He was irritated now, he got up from beside his sister and picked up his keys and said “Di I am going to LA next Wednesday, I haven’t booked a return ticket yet it might be a few weeks before I get back. Mama will take care of everything here and Aakash will be at home if you need anything and I guess NK will also be around. If you need anything from US just ask Aakash to email me.”

“Chotey the wedding is in 8 weeks, you have to be here for the wedding.”

“Ya Di, I know I will be back by then.” he said and started walking towards the door and said “Di I am going to see Sanaa to tell her about my trip. I will be late don’t wait up for me.”

***************************

He flicked the bell the third time before she opened the door. He walked in and headed straight for her sofa and sat down and flicked the TV on and changed the channel to a news channel.

Sanaa closed the door and followed him to the living room and leaned on the wall and watched him. When he had finished settling himself in, he said

“I am leaving to the US for a couple of weeks.”

“What!! ASR I didn’t know you were planning to go out of the country, when are you leaving?”

“Next Wednesday.” Was his short reply

“Ok good I think I can get everything on my schedule cleared in this week and I can join you on your trip, I won’t be able to stay away from you for a couple of weeks.” She finished

“Sanaa, there is no need for you to change your schedule and come with me. And what is this non-sense about not being able to stay without me??” he said with controlled temper

“ASR darling… you know, I was thinking about the next step in our relationship… and…”

He stood up faced her and yelled “Sanaa, what the heck!! Didn’t I tell you before I took you out on our first date that there will be no future in our relationship and you said that you always had open relationships and you understand what I am offering?”

“But ASR our relationship works so well and I never left this way about any other man I ever went out with, you are special darling…” she cooed and stepped forward and hugged him and played her last card.

She was pushed back and away from him and his eyes were filled with rage “Sanaa, don’t talk crap… how many guys have you said this to before me? You know ours is a relationship based on convenience and NOTHING more than that… understand?” he bellowed.

Sanaa was shocked. She didn’t come all this way to let go of him… he was her ticket to luxury and riches beyond her reach. She had used her mind and her body to get herself to a place where she could fall into some rich man’s eyes and her luck had got her near the most eligible bachelor in India and 8 months into the relationship, she had been his longest relationship ever. No absolutely not, she was not letting him go.

She turned to ASR and laughed and said “See ASR that’s what I wanted to show you, that we know each other so well and understand each other’s need’s thoroughly. I wanted you to realize that even if we take this relationship to the next level nothing changes I will not be a nagging partner and also I will help in getting your family off your back if you settle down.” She laughed a little more as if to imply all that they talked before was some joke she had planned.

ASR frowned she was playing him and he knew it, who does she think she is dealing with. But then again she had a valid point about his family. By then Sanaa had made him sit back on the sofa and cozily settled in his lap, took his hands and put them around her and leaned into him making sure her breasts were pushing into his chest and took his lips in for a kiss.

When he didn’t respond, she pulled back and said “ASR… please we won’t see each other for a long time… I need you…It was just a joke… imagine ME in YOUR house attending a Satsang… no thank you.. I am fine just the way things are…” she whispered the last in his ear and started kissing his earlobe and the slowly moved no to his firm jaw and kissed her way to his lips.

ASR closed his eyes and gulped down his anger as long as she knew her place. All the girls he had dated before her were on the marriage issue within three months; at least she knows where she stands. He felt Sanna’s hand reach into his shirt and roam on his chest and shoulders and he felt the familiar stirrings of desire in him.

His hands tightened around her waist and one hand moved up her back and onto her neck to position her face to best fit his lips. He pulled her closer and placed his lips on hers and she parted lips inviting him in. He closed his eyes and mechanically dug in…

Just as he closed his eyes… his brain conjured up a whole new picture… he could picture her lips against his, he suddenly wanted more, he deepened the kiss with a need he had never known before. His heart started racing and he could feel her fingers in his hair and it thrilled him to a new level. He sucked on her tongue and his hands travelled over her body but not too harshly just strong enough to feel her and let her feel his need for her. A thrill ran up his spine as his hands moved from her waist to cover her breast……. gosh he had waited for this for so long…

He was already so ready to take now… right now. He wanted her with such urgency…but he didn’t want to scare her she was so innocent…so fragile. He would go slow; he would ask her if it was ok with her… as he opened his eyes, with his voice filled with desire he said “Khushi…”

And the magic mirror broke into a million pieces right in front of his eyes as reality hit him hard in the gut and he saw Sanaa, still in a daze in his lap and….

He felt like throwing up….
